VBG Welcomes New Head of Information Technology

Las Vegas (Sept. 25, 2025)  — Veteran Benefits Guide is proud to announce the hiring of Thomas McDaniel as the company’s new senior director of information technology. In his new role, McDaniel will oversee all aspects of VBG’s IT components.

“I’m very excited to put my experience to work for a company that does so much good for our nation’s veterans,” McDaniel said. “Technology is moving faster than ever and it’s important that we stay ahead to keep doing that good work effectively and efficiently.”

McDaniel’s career includes the development of technology strategies and the successful delivery of large-scale, global service strategies. He has previously held leadership positions at Marriott International and eBay.

“We feel very fortunate to attract an IT expert with Thom’s skill and experience as we strive each day to improve our ability to deliver for veterans,” said Josh Smith, VBG co-founder and CEO. “Our leadership has every confidence in Thom’s ability to keep us on the cutting edge of communications technology.”

VBG also promoted Freddie De Yong to senior director of business intelligence and process and Patrick Holmes to senior director of marketing and communications.

De Yong’s career at VBG has spanned multiple leadership roles, including director of operations and director of business intelligence, where he has consistently brought a blend of strategic vision, operational acumen, and people-first leadership to the table. Known for his ability to turn data into actionable strategy, De Yong has played a pivotal role in transforming how VBG analyzes performance, streamlines workflows and empowers teams with the insights they need to thrive.

“Freddie’s empathy, tenacity and competitive spirit will serve him, and VBG, well in his new leadership role,” said Smith. “Feddie is very much in tune with our culture of service and performance. We’re proud of all he’s doing for our mission.”

Throughout his time at VBG, Holmes has helped shape the company’s brand positioning and messaging, while expanding initiatives that drive engagement with both internal and external audiences. His promotion reflects his demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional efforts and deliver results that support VBG’s broader business objectives.

“Patrick is a tremendous advocate for VBG’s efforts on behalf of veterans everywhere,” said Lisa Kalkas, chief marketing officer and vice president of public affairs. “Our organization relies heavily on Patrick’s experience and talent in crafting and disseminating compelling messages about VBG’s service to America’s heroes.”

Before joining VBG, Holmes served as the executive director of communications and marketing at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, Holmes led the effort to evolve and protect the university's brand, managed comprehensive internal communications strategies, and oversaw digital and social media initiatives.
